There’s a new commercial campaign for FIOS in which a little kid walks around trying to do things that his set-top box simply can’t do - pause in one room and resume in another; record every show; watch on a mobile device. His father keeps telling him it doesn’t work that way, to which the kid says “Why?” That’s the way facility IT should look at shared storage networks. Before rolling out your typical answer when asked to bypass the house switch infrastructure, or run 10Gb to every desktop, or even deploying shared fibre channel block-level storage, don’t be afraid to ask yourself “Why not?”
Necessity is the mother of invention, but stagnation is the mother of innovation. Create your own workflow, and your own model of efficiency, without the immobility of status quo IT infrastructures. We know the understanding that IT managers often have with the GM is “We’ll make it work, just follow our rules”. Be one of those breakout stars of the video IT convergence that understand innovation is occurring at a much faster rate in the content creation world, and traditional IT will never keep up. Rules are made to be broken.
