Can high-end post tools empower the small facility?

Posted by James McKenna on 6/23/15 3:29 PM

In the UK, March saw the publication of Broadcast magazine’s Indie Survey 2015 and this annual overview of our industry provided some fascinating reading. It represents an important overview of the global Indie sector, which the report’s authors value at a whopping US$ 3.5 billion.

Amongst a plethora of facts & figures is a trend indicating the rise of a new breed of tech savvy facilities that are using technology to empower their staff and return some stunning trading results. Whilst the #1 position on the survey list is firmly owned by IMG (WME) which employs 347 full-time UK staff, the next two positions are filled by Carnival Film & Television and Thames who each employ just 22 staff. And these two facilities are at the cutting edge, producing blockbuster series such as Downton Abbey and The X Factor respectively.

Who Turned Out The Lights? - Disaster Recovery Strategies

Posted by James McKenna on 10/22/14 11:00 AM

The post 9/11 years in New York were a breeding ground for DR solutions that few were even imagining in the years prior. There was a time when the worst case scenario was losing a drive in a RAID0, or two in a mirror. After 9/11 there were greater things to worry about, as we were reminded in August 2003 when the lights went out in NYC. We considered what would happen to the shows that we're delivering. Would we be able to continue production on those in the near future if the power didn't return? What if this was an attack, and we were vulnerable to this happening again? Luckily that event was not terrorist-related, and power was back in a couple days.

But the seeds were sown - I started to get requests for off-site storage, and started developing new multi-dup policies of all masters (all tape-based back then of course) and keeping them in a secure location outside the city. Once footage was digitized, standalone spinning disks, DVD-R and new LTO technology became a hot commodity.

Change Technology, Not People - Catering to The Unique Workflow

Posted by James McKenna on 8/20/14 11:32 AM

Many post coordinators live by the credo, "If it's not broken, don't fix it".The problem is, there are various levels of broken. Think of a road with a pothole. Patching it with sand will solve the problem temporarily, maybe enough to announce that the road is no longer broken. Filling it with asphalt patch will do a better job, but eventually that will crumble with wear. In the long run, the best bet is just to drive around it.

Workflows built around deficiencies in networks are like driving around the pothole. You may have tried to patch it a couple times, but in the end you just build enough avoidance into the process that it doesn't affect you. After several years, we find ourselves in the middle of a workflow that makes little sense to anyone that wasn't around since the beginning.

How to tell if you have an "Avoidance Workflow":

Here’s a Secret - It’s Not About the Hardware

Posted by James McKenna on 7/31/14 10:11 AM

It’s amazing how much storage you can get for so little these days. As of this writing, a 4TB internal hard drive retails for about $250. So, right now you can buy 100TB raw storage for under $7,000. Pick out a nice drive enclosure with RAID controllers and external connectivity like fibre channel or SAS and voila, you have direct attached storage (DAS).

Now, for your next trick, make that into a SAN.
